Description
Charles Burchfield (attributed; American, 1893–1967)Wallpaper No. 2904 [Idyllic Forest Scene]
Manufactured by M. H. Birge Co & Sons, Buffalo, New York
Circa 1920s
Marked in the selvage “Birge Made in U.S.A.”
19-1/4” wide by 18-5/8” long (one full panel)
Small, nearly invisible tear to top edge with neat tape reinforcement to reverse; otherwise in clean, fresh, very fine condition. (Please note that there is no trimming to the edges, and both end cuts are perfectly perpendicular (90 degrees) to the sides; any seeming distortion or irregularity is in the photos only.)
Comments: The scene depicts a temple-like pavilion in Classical style, surrounded by highly stylized trees and flowers. While I was unable to definitively establish Burchfield’s authorship, the paper dates to the era of his employment as a designer at Birge (1921 – 1929), and a number of elements bear a close affinity with those found in Burchfield’s “fine” watercolors--most notably the distinctive, simplified quality of the trees, as well as the clustered “concentric” design of the flowers, reflecting the radiant halos that are a recurring motif in the artist’s depictions of nature.
IMPORTANT NEW NOTE ON SHIPPING--PLEASE READ.
I'm not a fan of fine print and disclaimers, but a number of recent developments have contributed to likely delays in shipping:
1) Changes at the USPS have resulted in longer shipping times, particularly to more distant destinations (i.e., the south, midwest, and west). Please take this into account. I generally ship using the least expensive class that's appropriate, but I will gladly make arrangements for expedited shipping upon request. If there are any issues with delays/tracking, please contact me immediately--I am happy to assist.
2) Most sellers (by the end of 2020, all sellers) are now required to enroll in eBay's Managed Payments program. As part of this program,
eBay holds every buyer's payment for two business days before releasing it to the seller.
This means that if you pay late on a Thursday night, your payment will not clear until at least Tuesday. If you pay on a Monday morning, your payment will not clear until at least Wednesday. Again, please take this into account.
In case of any issues or problems, please contact me before opening a request or dispute.
As my long feedback record makes clear, I strive to provide accuracy in descriptions, great care in packaging and shipping, and excellent customer service.
Contacting me directly first to resolve questions or issues greatly speeds up the process and ensures greatest satisfaction.
