Description
For your review is a cloth unit patch for the USCG Light Station Pt. Reyes, California (just north of the Golden Gate Bridge). This design was developed in 1969 by a Coast Guardsman serving at the light at the time but was never produced. Recently it was finally manufactured. Measures 5" tall and 4" wide. The lighthouse was first put into service in 1870 and continued until it was automated in 1975.The Point Reyes Headlands jut 10 miles (16km)out to sea and pose a threat to ships traveling between San Francisco Bay and points north. The historic Pt. Reyes Lighthouse was built to warn mariners of the navigational hazard and served for 105 years. The Point Reyes Lighthouse was retired from the service in 1975 when the US Coast Guard installed an automated light adjacent and below the historic tower.
The Coast Guard then transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the National Park Service, which has taken on the job of preserving this fine specimen of our maritime heritage.
FLW5s at the bottom stands for "Flashing White 5 seconds for visual recognition of the light itself. The 313 is for the 313 steps from the cliff top down to the lighthouse.
The lighthouse just recently went through a 5.7 million dollar 13 month renovation.
